How Overall Band Score is Calculated: The IELTS overall band score is calculated by taking the average of the 4 individual components (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Under official IELTS rounding conventions: if the average fraction is .25, it rounds up to the next half band (e.g. 6.25 → 6.5); if it is .75, it rounds up to the next whole band (e.g. 6.75 → 7.0); if it ends in .125 or .625, it rounds down to the nearest half or whole band.

The overall IELTS band score is the arithmetic mean of the four module scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking), rounded according to official Cambridge Assessment rules: If the average ends in .25, it rounds UP to the next half band (.50). If the average ends in .75, it rounds UP to the next whole band (.00). If it ends in .125, it rounds DOWN to the lower band, and if it ends in .625, it rounds down to .50.
Both Listening and Reading consist of 40 total questions. For Listening, Band 7.0 requires 30-31 correct, Band 7.5 requires 32-34 correct, and Band 8.0 requires 35-36 correct. For Academic Reading, Band 7.0 requires 30-32 correct, Band 7.5 requires 33-34 correct, and Band 8.0 requires 35-36 correct. For General Training Reading, Band 7.0 requires 34-35 correct, Band 7.5 requires 36 correct, and Band 8.0 requires 37-38 correct.
To achieve Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 9 on IELTS General Training, you must achieve minimum individual module scores of: Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, and Speaking 7.0 (popularly known as “8777”). Scoring CLB 9 triggers maximum Skill Transferability bonus points in Canada Express Entry.
The Listening, Writing, and Speaking test components share the same format and scoring scale. However, Reading differs: Academic Reading uses complex texts from academic journals and research, while General Training uses notices, workplace advertisements, and newspapers. Because General Training reading passages are easier, the raw score grading scale is stricter: achieving 30 correct answers awards Band 7.0 in Academic Reading, but only Band 6.0 in General Training Reading.
Under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): IELTS Band 5.5 to 6.5 maps to B2 (Vantage / Independent User); IELTS Band 7.0 to 8.0 maps to C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency / Advanced User); and IELTS Band 8.5 to 9.0 maps to C2 (Mastery / Proficient User). Top universities in the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia require minimum C1 level (Band 6.5 to 7.5).
